Ongoing Projects-

Neighborhoods that Work:

  • Councilmember Sterling has and will continue to work diligently for neighborhoods that work. The task is large and will be an ongoing effort throughout her term and includes: reducing crime, making sure every home gets basic city services (sidewalks, code enforcement, public utilities), creating jobs with economic development, and getting the community involved in education. The quality of these city services defines the quality of life in a neighborhood.

Jane Addams Basin Park and Neighborhood Improvement Projects:

  • The City of Fresno, Council District 3, has contributed over $100,000 to the Fresno Metropolitan Flood Control District in order to convert half of the current Basin XX (Hughes/ McKinley) into a city park for residents.
  • In Summer 2008, the basin will be fully landscaped and the eastern portion of the site will be home to a baseball/ soccer field.
  • Currently, there is no city park in the immediate area.
  • Installation of signal at McKinley Avenue and Hughes Avenue and the north side of McKinley Avenue and Marks Avenue.
  • Construction of curbs, gutters, and sidewalks along McKinley Avenue between Marks Avenue and Hughes Avenue (estimate cost $4,000,000)

Seniors:

  • Seniors are a priority for Councilmember Sterling. She serves on the Board of Directors of the Fresno-Madera Area Agency on Aging. She speaks out on the need to provide a higher quality of life for all of our seniors.

Affordable Housing and Housing in Downtown Fresno:

  • Councilmember Sterling currently serves on the City’s 10x10 Blue Ribbon Committee to develop 10,000 units of affordable housing by 2010, throughout the City of Fresno.
  • Councilmember Sterling has worked to bring housing to the downtown area with an emphasis on mixed-use development. The first major effort was Vagabond Lofts with the next being Fulton Park Plaza and the Legacy Project.
  • In Chinatown and the South Stadium are two private developers who are working with the city and the Redevelopment Agency to bring between 800 and 1,200 new residential units to the central area of downtown.
  • Bringing housing downtown will:
      • Contribute to the City’s efforts to revitalize the area and make for a more vibrant downtown.
      • Cut down on air pollution from cars by commuting downtown workers.
      • Assist with economic development by creating new jobs in the construction process and by generating new business opportunities.
      • Making a portion of downtown housing affordable will provide opportunities for first-time homebuyers and allow families to live the “American Dream.”

Hope for Holidays:

  • Annually contributed $5,000 so that the Hope for the Holidays organization could use the Convention Center for the annual event in December to feed homeless families and give gifts to the children and their parents.

Food for the Holidays:

  • Since 2003, raised over $150,000 to purchase turkeys and food for residents of my district on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Turkeys are donated to District 3 schools, churches, and non-profit agencies and fed over 117,000 people.
